A consumer protection court in Chengalapttu has ordered soft drink maker Pepsi to pay 50,000 to a man who reportedly found dead ants and a fly in one of the five bottles purchased from a shop in Kancheepuram.

The man, who purchased the soft drinks in June last year, filed a case the next month against the owner as well as the agents, who supplied the soft drinks to the shop. The company was included as respondent.

Though a notice was sent to them, they reportedly did not reply to it.

When the case came up for hearing, the agent and shop owner were present, but no company representative.

The two member court held that neither the shopkeeper or agent were to be held responsible for the contaminated condition of the bottle, which had reached them in a sealed condition and ordered the company to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation 'for endangering the health of consumers'.
