NSA meets Governor Vohra over J&K unrest
NDTV Correspondent
Wednesday, August 20, 2008, (Jammu)
National Security Advisor M K Narayanan has met Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra to discuss the simmering crisis in the state.
Narayanan's visit comes after Centre's fresh attempts to start a dialogue process with the protestors hit a deadend. The situation is threatening to spiral out of control with both sides determined to intensify their protests.
The National Security Advisor is accompanied by Intelligence Bureau Director P C Haldar, Defence Secretary Vijay Singh and a Joint Secretary in the PMO.
The proposed march by separatists to Idgah in interior city on Friday also came up for discussion during the meeting, sources said.
The state government has renewed its invitation to Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti that is spearheading the agitation in Jammu for talks. This is the fourth time that such an invitation has been extended.
The Jail Bharo agitation in Jammu is into its third day on Wednesday. The administration has imposed curfew in the entire Jammu region.
After men and women children and even toddlers are being included in the Jail Bharo protests.
They marched along with adults on a hot day in Jammu while many had to be carried along by their protesting parents.
But Srinagar and the rest of the Kashmir valley is expected to be calm like Tuesday as no protests are planned till Friday when the Hurriyat Conference has called a protest march
The traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway is smooth with essentials like food and petroleum products reaching both Jammu and Srinagar.
Sangharsh Samiti calls for civil disobedience
Even after the renewed attempt by the Centre to solve the crisis in Jammu, the Amarnath Sagharsh Samiti has called for civil disobedience.
The Samiti has asked people not to pay Value Added Tax, electricity bills, water bills and passenger tax.
